Rev James Patrick Haldane-Stevenson was born at Llandaff, Wales on 17 March 1910 . His mother was a great-grand-daughter of Robert Haldane, whose Airthrey Estate is now the University of Stirling campus. His father’s family was connected with the engineering firm Dick & Stevenson. Both his parents came from Airdrie. After university, he trained for the ministry and was ordained to a Lambeth curacy in 1935 .
